Attorneys meet with criminal defendants who do not qualify for a public defender, but lack the money for a private attorney. An initial consultation takes place at arraignment courts in Ramsey County. Types of cases handled are limited to petty misdemeanors, misdemeanors, gross misdemeanors, and some low-level felony offenses.

Application process
- Attorneys are assigned to appear at arraignments in Room 131A of the Ramsey County Courthouse, at the Ramsey County Law Enforcement Center, and at the Ramsey County Suburban Courthouse in Maplewood. They will review a list of people who do not qualify for the public defender and provide an initial consultation - Additional screening for legal representation is necessary. Those who qualify for representation must sign a written retainer agreement with CDSI and pay the quoted fee before becoming a client of CDSI

All documents pertaining to the legal issues including any paperwork received concerning the case; and the names, phone numbers, and addresses of all persons involved. Preparing and bringing a written summary of the legal situation is suggested
