Legal Access Point Clinic - LRIS - Hennepin County Bar Association

Volunteer attorneys spend about 15-20 minutes per client providing legal advice and/or brief services on most legal issues in combination with services provided by court Self-Help Center staff. Services include: - Brief legal services from volunteer attorneys - Please note that persons receive free legal advice, not representation, from an attorney. The attorneys are volunteers and may have emergencies that may require them to cancel at the last minute. - Forms and written instructions (some fees may apply) - Guardianship assistance is targeted to adults who are disabled or elderly and who lack capacity to make decisions for themselves. - Videos on how to represent yourself in court - Online tools for filling out forms - One-on-one help to learn court procedures - One-on-one review of court forms - Referrals to community resources and legal services

Application process

- Clinic operates on a walk-in, first come, first served basis - Need to sign up for the clinic at the Self-Help desk on the Skyway level - Clinics may be cancelled at any time due to attorney unavailability - For information regarding a particular practice area or attorney specialty on a particular day, call (612)752-6666 or visit the Legal Clinic Calendar on the Hennepin County District Court website http://www.mncourts.gov/district/4/?page=1200

Fee

- Generally none; some fees may apply (envelopes and/or postage) - Expungement fees: $8 fee for BCA request form; $10 fee for each criminal record

Required documents

- All documents pertaining to legal issues including any paperwork received concerning the case; and the names, phone numbers and addresses of all persons involved. Preparing and bringing a written summary of the legal situation will also make the most of the time available with the attorney. - Expungement Requirements: - If possible, obtain copies of court records and the Bureau of Criminal Apprehension (BCA) records ahead of time. - To obtain criminal records from the Bureau of Criminal Apprehension, visit https://dps.mn.gov/divisions/bca/Pages/criminal-history-search.aspx - To obtain court records from the Minnesota Court Informational Systems (MNCIS), go to any state courthouse and request records or visit website, www.mncourts.gov/caserecords. Must physically be at the courthouse when requesting records to receive complete records history. Requesting court records via the website from a location other than the courthouse will not yield complete records. If unable to pay fee, obtain the Case Records Search Results information listing all cases and case numbers.
