Minnesota Family Investment Program - MFIP - Wabasha County Social Services
Minnesota's version of TANF (Temporary Assistance for Needy Families). Helps families work their way out of poverty by providing temporary cash and food benefits to eligible families. While MFIP has a 60-month time limit, there are some limited exceptions and extensions. Participants are required to follow certain work rules. Failure to meet these requirements will result in MFIP grants being sanctioned or reduced. In addition: - Child support will be pursued in those situations where one or both parents are absent - A woman expecting a baby may receive assistance for herself during her pregnancy - Children who are being cared for by certain relatives may receive assistance NOTE: MFIP recipients may be eligible for Emergency Assistance, Child Care Assistance, Medical Assistance, and/or Food Support.

Eligibility
1. Two-parent families must work immediately 2. Single-parent families must work within 6 months. Counties have the option of requiring work sooner; most require work within four months. 3. Parents who don't work or follow through to support their families have their assistance reduced first by 10% and then 30%. Those facing the 30% penalty have their rent paid directly to their landlord. 4. There is a 60-month lifetime limit on assistance 5. Those over age 60, ill, incapacitated, caring for family members with disabilities or experiencing a crisis are exempt from work requirements. Parents can use a lifetime total exemption of 12 months to care for children under age 1. 6. Domestic abuse victims following safety plans are temporarily exempt from time limits
