Eligibility

Homeless children and youth who lack a fixed, regular, and adequate night-time residence, including those who:
  • Are sleeping in cars, parks, abandoned buildings, substandard housing, or a similar setting
  • Are staying at motels, trailer parks, or campgrounds due to the lack of an adequate alternative
  • Are staying in shelters or a transitional housing
  • Are unaccompanied youth who are not in the physical custody of a parent or guardian
  • Share the housing of others due to loss of housing, economic hardship, or a similar reason

Offers services to children and youth who are experiencing homelessness to ensure they receive appropriate public education and stability. Homeless liaisons and/or social workers are responsible for ensuring the educational stability and protecting the rights of students experiencing homelessness or housing instability.

Each school district and charter school is required to have a designated District Homeless Liaison. The specific services available to students may vary by public school district and charter school. These services may include:

- Assistance with immediate school enrollment

- Free breakfast and lunch at school

- Information about available preschool programs

- Nutrition assistance

- Referrals to community resources, such as medical care, food, housing, mental health support, and other assistance

- Scholarships for school-related activities

- School supplies

- Transportation assistance
