Screens individuals who are being referred for civil commitment, an involuntary process in which the court determines that an individual's mental illness or chemical dependence is cause them to be a danger to themselves or others. Often the requestor is a hospital or medical/psychiatric professionals. However, anyone is able to request these screenings. The Pre-Petition Screening gathers information, including talking to the individual, and makes a recommendation if the individual meets criteria for civil commitment as outlined in MN State Statutes. The screening looks at what is the least restrictive option for treatment and safety. The ultimate decision and authority lies with the court to civilly commit an individual. Individuals who are placed under civil commitment may be treated in a community or state hospital or receive intensive community-based care during a time of acute need.
