Description
Provides state-funded food assistance to legal noncitizens age 50 or older who do not qualify for the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP, formerly called Food Stamps or Food Support) because of their citizenship status. Monthly benefits are loaded on an Electronic Benefit Transfer (EBT) card, which looks and works like a debit card. The card can be used to buy groceries at authorized stores, farmers markets, and online retailers. Learn more about where to shop and what can be bought. The Department administers the various cash and medical assistance programs as well as child support; is a member of the Blue Plus, UCare, and SCHA delivering the MA programs; operates a licensed Mental Health Center and Crime Victims' Crisis Center; provides child and vulnerable adult protective services; services to persons with developmental disabilities and chemical dependency; in-home family counseling; provides adolescent (SED) day treatment jointly with the Albert Lea School District and children's mental health services.
