Conciliation Court Clinic - Phone Advice - Volunteer Lawyers Network

Volunteer attorneys spend between 15 - 30 minutes per client providing legal advice and/or brief services and assistance in preparing forms on conciliation court claims up to $15,000. Attorneys can usually complete and print the conciliation court claim form and can help prepare for a hearing, draft demand letters, and prepare a counterclaim or cross-claim related to an existing conciliation court case. Conciliation court issues could include: - Back rent owed - Damage to property - Defective goods - Defective workmanship - Property recovery - Security deposits - Unpaid wage claims Note: Individuals receive free legal advice or brief services, not representation, from an attorney. The attorneys are volunteers and may have emergencies that may require them to cancel at the last minute.

- Call to complete intake screening - Can select option to continue in Spanish, to be connected to Spanish-speaking staff

Required documents

All documents pertaining to legal issue including any paperwork received concerning the case; and the names and addresses of all persons involved. Clients with landlord-tenant issues should provide a copy of the lease if possible. Preparing a written summary of the legal situation will also make the most of the time available with the attorney.

Eligibility

Open to all low income individuals needing legal services who meet income requirements; households up to 300% of the Federal Poverty Guidelines. Legal issues must be in Minnesota for advice/brief consultation.

Volunteer-based nonprofit that provides free civil legal services to low-income individuals. Services provided range from free legal advice to free full representation, depending on eligibility and issue type. VLN does not handle any cases in which an attorney may recover fees, including contingency fees, business transactions, business litigation, employment discrimination, government benefits, wills and probate, workers' compensation, or criminal matters.
