Provides free, brief advice to all and full legal representation assistance to qualifying low-income owners of small businesses and those who would like to start a small business. Also provides transactional (non-litigation) business law services.

Application process

- Call; email; visit website - Services are provided at clinic locations or a location arranged by the attorney; main office location is administrative only - For full representation assistance, must complete on-line application form and submit via email or conventional mail - Visit website for locations of and specific intake procedures for the Brief Advice Clinics, www.legalcorps.org/small-businesses/eligibility/advice - Long-Distance Clinics are provided by video or phone conference - Once eligibility for services has been determined and a volunteer attorney has been identified and determines there is no conflict of interest, the attorney will contact the client - No services are provided on-site; all services are provided remotely or at partner organization locations

Fee

$50 administrative fee for those placed with an attorney for full legal representation

Eligibility

- Free brief advice for all; low-income owners of small businesses and nonprofit organizations or individuals interested in starting up a small business - Must be a Minnesota resident, or own and operate a business in Minnesota - Have an annual household income that meets 200% of the Federal Poverty Guidelines; a review panel may consider circumstances or other factors when determining household income - Establish that the venture is at a stage in which legal assistance would be appropriate, i.e., more than 'an idea' - Statewide

Through a large base of volunteer business lawyers, LegalCORPS expands access to business and nonprofit legal services by providing free legal education and brief advice to all small business owners, inventors, and nonprofits throughout Minnesota, and provides legal representation in transactional matters to qualifying low-income small business owners, individuals interested in starting a small business, and small nonprofit organizations throughout Minnesota.
