Special Supplemental Nutrition Program - WIC - Koochiching County Health Department

A supplemental food and nutrition program for low-income pregnant, breastfeeding, and postpartum women, and infants and young children who area at a nutritional risk. The purpose of the WIC Program is to prevent health problems and to improve the health of program participants during critical times of growth and development. The WIC Program provides nutrition education, access to health services, referrals to health and other social services and vouchers for supplemental foods. The food vouchers list the types and quantities of WIC foods that are consistent with the participant's nutritional needs.

Application process

WIC is not an entitlement program, and therefore applicants participate in a screening and assessment process to determine eligibility. This process is called certification and the certification period is for a specified amount of time (i.e., until the end of pregnancy, the first birthday and six month increments for children)

Eligibility

Primarily serves Koochiching County Criteria is: - A pregnant woman, a postparturm woman within six months of delivery, a breastfeeding woman within 12 months of delivery, an infant up to 12 months of age or a child up to his/her fifth birthday - Residing in Minnesota - Family income less than 185% of the national poverty level - An identifiable medical/nutritional risk determined by a qualified health professional
