Free Tax Preparation Assistance - Prepare and Prosper
Provides comprehensive free tax assistance, from late January to October, to low- and moderate-income Minnesota taxpayers. Provides the following services: - Do It Yourself Prep: Online training is available to help individuals get ready to file their taxes, and a Self-Prep Tax Guide and the software individuals need to file taxes for free is provided. Individuals need to reserve a spot in the webinar. 50 slots are available per webinar and it will be offered once a week starting in February continuing to April 20. Webinar scheduling availability changes from day to day so check the website to see what is available often for an opening. - DIY Tax Prep: This option is available for people with annual incomes under $73,000 who have access to technology. This program will include a link to create a free TaxSlayer account so individuals can prepare and electronically file their federal and state income taxes as well as the Minnesota property tax refund. Includes a Do-it-Yourself Tax Prep Guide, a useful resource to help individuals navigate tax situations and the tax software. They will offer weekly training on navigating TaxSlayer. Additionally, support will be provided via email and phone to get individuals over the finish line and file if they get stuck in their tax returns. - Tax Prep: Appointments are conducted multiple site locations across the Twin Cities. Appointment scheduling begins January 27th until full. Appointments are only scheduled two weeks out at a time. Click here to make an appointment and find tax preparation sites. Tax preparation is available through appointment-only drop-off services. - Taxpayers with difficult taxes or amendments should call the main office for screening - Taxpayers with self-employed income of $6,000 or more must call to make an appointment

"What to Bring" checklist for tax preparation posted in English and Spanish on website or see list below. Identification forms: - For each person listed on the return: Social Security card or Individual Taxpayer Identification Number (ITIN) card or letter AND birth date - Picture I.D. Income statements or forms like the following: - Wages from each job (Form W-2) - Interest (Form 1099-INT) - Dividends (Form 1099-DIV) - Retirement plans( Form 1099-R) - Gambling winnings (Form W-2G) - Unemployment (Form 1099-G) - Social Security Benefits (Form SSA-1099) - Misc. income (1099-MISC) - Sale of stock (1099-B) - Scholarships and grants (1098-T) If applicable also bring: - Prior year's tax return - Verification of health insurance for each person listed on the return (1095-A or 1095-B) - Checking and/or savings account routing numbers - Year-end income statements for MFIP, SSI, MSA, GA, veterans' benefits and workers' compensation - Receipts for education expenses you paid for your children in grades K-12. For example tutoring, rental/purchase of musical instruments, music lessons, pencils, notebooks, etc. - Tuition expenses you paid to attend a university/technical college (Form 1098-T) - Interest you paid on student loans (1098-E) - Daycare expenses you paid for your children. Bring provider's name, address, and tax ID or social security number - Records of charitable donations or cash and non-cash - Homeowners: Mortgage interest and real estate taxes paid in 2014 (Form 1098) and Statement of Property Tax Payable in 2015 mailed by the county in March - Renters: Certificate of Rent Paid (CRP) from your landlord

Must meet income guidelines: - DIY Tax Prep: Available for individuals with an annual income under $73,000 - Do It Yourself, Virtual Tax Prep and In-Person Drop Off: Individuals making $35,000 or less; families making $55,000 or less per year - Self-employed taxpayers with income less than $55,000 per year - Serves the Twin Cities Metro area
