Eligibility

Open to all low income individuals in Minnesota who meet income requirements; households up to 300% of the Federal Poverty Guidelines with the exception of Benton, Chisago, Isanti, Mille Lacs, Morrison, Ramsey, Sherburne, Stearns, and Todd county residents (unless declined by local Legal Aid for service)

Required documents

All documents pertaining to legal issue including any paperwork received concerning the case and the names, phone numbers and addresses of all persons involved. Preparing a written summary of the legal situation will also make the most of the time available with the attorney.

Volunteer attorneys write letters to the client's creditors instructing the creditor to stop contacting the client. Service is primarily for clients receiving income that cannot be garnished by a creditor, such as Social Security, or when the client is receiving a form of public assistance, such as Food Support, MFIP, etc.

Volunteer Lawyers Network

Volunteer-based nonprofit that provides free civil legal services to low-income individuals. Services provided range from free legal advice to free full representation, depending on eligibility and issue type. VLN does not handle any cases in which an attorney may recover fees, including contingency fees, business transactions, business litigation, employment discrimination, government benefits, wills and probate, workers' compensation, or criminal matters.
