Provides appropriate forms, information and referrals to parties representing themselves in family court. Staff cannot provide legal assistance or act as an attorney. Services include: - 30 minute video on "How to Start a Divorce" - Access to motion forms or dissolution forms which can be completed at home or at the center. All appropriate documentation must be included. - Staff review of documents for neatness, completeness and consistency - Staff assistance with scheduling court hearings, making copies and explaining service requirements - Legal clinic open two times a week. Volunteer attorneys can provide answers to legal questions, offer procedural advice and help fill out court provided forms. They may also help explain a Court Order. They can provide assistance in the areas of divorce, child custody, child support, visitation, paternity issues and other family law matters. - Child Support Motion Clinic, 9 am, first and third Friday of month for those who want to modify the child support order. Family law cases handled include: - Cases for victims of abuse where the courts or law enforcement are not following rules or laws - Cases for victims of abuse or primary caretakers that challenge racial or other illegal discrimination - Indian Child Welfare Act cases (Ramsey County only) Legal assistance to victims of domestic violence, sexual assault, dating violence, or stalking: - Custody - Divorce - Harassment Restraining Orders (HRO's) - Orders for Protections (OFP's) - Paternity (if can't obtain court-appointed counsel) Primary Caretakers: - Child-snatching - Custody modifications and restricted parenting time when the child is in danger - Responding to divorce or custody petitions where the other parent is seeking custody May accept a custody case on behalf of a friend or family member if: The child will otherwise be placed in fostercare; The child is in danger in the parents' care; The friend or relative has been the child's primary caretaker for at least 6 months (if the child is under 3 years old) or one year (if over 3 years old)

Offered by the Scott County Law Library, Minnesota Justice Foundation (law students from Hamline, St. Thomas, University of Minnesota and William Mitchell) and local volunteer attorneys. Law students, under the supervision of practicing attorneys, assist participants in using the Minnesota Self-Helf Center I-Can program to fill out divorce paperwork. The I-Can program is an online form tool that asks the user questions and creates the forms needed to start a divorce. Participants have the opportunity to submit their paperwork to the Self-Help Center for review before filing.

In Minnesota, expungement is primarily used for criminal and eviction records. The Expungement clinic provided by this library deals with criminal expungements. Expungement clinics are intended to be a one-time event to assist those who are representing themselves in the courts. Expungement clinics are held in January, March, May, July, September, and November. This clinic is an opportunity for a brief advice consultation with a volunteer criminal defense attorney to ask questions about whether criminal expungement is a viable option for an individual's needs. Processes and maintains court cases regarding divorce, legal separation, paternity, child custody, and child support. Maintains records of divorce decrees and other family court orders for cases heard in Hennepin County. The Domestic Abuse Service Center serves people who are victims of violence caused by a family or household member. Services are for anyone who has been the victim of actual or threatened violence by a person with whom they have had a romantic or sexual relationship, or people who have lived together. Services include: Advocacy; filing protection orders, connecting with a prosecution team; and seek legal consultation and representation from pro-bono attorneys.

A group of students, alumni, and reference librarians volunteer to help individuals represent themselves in court. The clinic provides assistance with completing a self-help form for the following legal issues: - Child support modifications - Criminal expungement - Dissolution/divorce - Establishing custody and parenting time - Modifying parenting time Students and staff are trained to provide legal assistance with filling out the required paperwork in the areas above. The focus is on completing the paperwork; if an individual needs assistance outside of the areas above clinic staff will refer them to other resources. Staff cannot and will not serve as legal counsel or representation for anyone in court.
