• Partners with the Minnesota Department of Human Services - Refugee Assistance Program to provide assistance developing job skills and finding employment

Health

• Grant-funded through UCare to provide education regarding diabetes, child and teen check-ups, and mental health

• Partners with Minnesota Care Counseling to provide linguistically appropriate trauma counseling

• Works with the Governor's Council on Developmental Disabilities to provide leadership training to people with disabilities in the Somali and Latinx communities

• Works with the Minnesota Department of Health to assess Somali communities throughout southern Minnesota for suicide prevention readiness and come up with plans to increase prevention measures

Resettlement

• Assistance with health care access, legal protection, education, training for income generation skills, and other services

• Assists new arrivals with documentation paperwork and in navigating the American system

• English as a Second Language (ESL) classes are taught at Faribault site through partnership with Faribault Adult Basic Education

• Southern Minnesota Regional Legal Services assists with legal issues and documentation

• Works with Rice County Social Services to connect transportation and childcare resources, and provide job search assistance

Youth and Elders

• Programming for health and socialization is provided for elders in partnership with UCare

• Provides work experiences and supported employment to older workers through the Senior Community Supported Employment Program

• Through partnerships with the Minnesota Department of Human Services and the Minnesota Department of Employment and Economic Development, leadership, soft skills training, and assistance with job searching is providing to youth

Provides an alternative opportunity for students in grades 9-12 and up to age 20 to earn their high school diploma. Services may include:

• Adult classes and one-to-one tutoring in reading, writing, spelling, and math

• Collaborative work programs with Washington and Dakota County CareerForce

• Computer assisted learning and basic skills classes

• English language classes and in the workplace

• GED testing

Program designed to meet the needs of adult refugees, immigrants, and migrant workers whose native language is other than English. Students may enroll at any time of the year as they strive to achieve skills in spoken and written English. Written and oral drills are used extensively, as well as real-life settings that enable learners to navigate their way through everyday experiences.

Partners with eight school districts and other community organizations in the northern metro area to offer adult basic education. Services provided:

• Assistance in preparing for the GED examination is available at Anoka Technical College, Blaine Learning Center, Elk River ABE, and Saint Francis ABE

• Brush-up instruction in reading, writing, and math is available at all sites except Anoka-Ramsey Community College, Centennial Adult Continuing Education, and Brooklyn Center ABE

• Credit Recovery Diploma available at Blaine Learning Lab and Elk River ABE

• English as a Second Language class for foreign-born adults is available at all sites except Anoka-Ramsey Community College and Anoka Technical College

• GED Testing Centers are located at the Anoka Technical College and the Blaine Learning Lab site

• Minnesota State Diploma available at the Blaine Learning Lab and Elk River Community Education Center sites

• Adult Basic Education - ABE

• Preparation for General Education Development (GED) tests; tutoring; or refresher courses to improve reading, math, spelling or writing skills

• English as a Second Language for adults (during school year)

• Community Education Program: Adult and youth enrichment classes and activities including home visits for parents of babies ages birth - 12 months. Baby activity book, blanket, and resources for new parents available.

• Adult Basic Education: Adults ages 17 and older not enrolled in public school can improve their skills in reading, writing, math and computer. Face-to-face classes are available with a teacher, as well as computer-based programs for use both in and away from school. These classes can help adults get prepared for college and employment.

• Adult Diploma: Standards based, competency diploma program. Diploma competency areas include: English Language Arts, Mathematics, Social Studies, Digital Literacy and Career Development, and Employability Skills. Students must be adults ages 19 and older, take and pass a reading test, and have a level of math competency at low intermediate ABE level.

• Bridges to Careers: Offers a variety of options to help individuals not in college to transition into employment or college courses at Rochester Community and Technical College

• Citizenship: Provides citizenship preparation classes to adults ages 18 and older who have been a permanent resident for at least 5 years or 3 years if married to a United States citizen, and are able to speak, read and write English. These classes prepare students to take the citizenship test and interview.

• Computer Literacy: Hawthorne Education Center is a sponsoring site for the Northstar Digital Literacy program. Through learning, assessments and proctored tests, students can gain a certificate in Computer Literacy.

• English as a Second Language: 7 levels of English language training are available for adults ages 17 and older who are non-native English speakers. Classes are offered Monday - Thursday mornings and afternoons. Beginning and intermediate courses provide instruction and practice in reading, writing, speaking, listening and grammar. Advanced courses provide instruction and practice in college preparatory language skills and in conversation and pronunciation. Most courses range in size from 10 - 20 learners, and all are taught entirely in English.

• Family Literacy: Combines adult literacy, parent education and early childhood education into 1 program, to provide a comprehensive family literacy program for families with children ages birth - 7 years. Children must qualify for free and reduced lunch. Families must have English as a second language, wish to complete the GED or High School Diploma, or college and job training.

• General Educational Development (GED) Prep and Tests: Hawthorne Education Center is an authorized GED (General Education Development) Pearson Testing Center
