Financial counselors can help individuals understand patients' responsibilities and may offer no-interest payment plans. Other options may include: Charity Care/Financial Assistance: Intended to assist those low-income, underinsured, and/or uninsured individuals who cannot otherwise pay full charges as determined under the hospital's qualification criteria. It should take into account each individual's ability to contribute to the cost of his or her care. Good Faith Estimate: Under the law, healthcare providers need to give patients who don't have insurance or who are not using insurance an estimate of the bill for medical items and services. This service is for those who receive a bill that is at least $400 more than the Good Faith Estimate.

Provides the Customer Assistance Program that can be applied to most services on patient's medical bills. The program is provided when care is deemed medically necessary, after meeting income criteria. Offers both free care and discounted care, depending on individuals' family size and income. Medical expenses not covered under this program are insurance co-pays, Department Transportation physicals, Lakewood Care Center, Care Van, Lakewood Pines, or Manor Accounts, and In Vitro Fertilization services.
Assists in paying for Medicare premiums. Participants must still pay for Medicare services that aren't covered, such as routine physicals and prescription drugs under these programs. Generally under these programs, premiums are put back into the monthly Social Security check, increasing participants' monthly income. Qualified Disabled and Working Individuals (QDWI): Helps pay for Part A premiums only. Qualifying Individual (QI): Helps pay for Part B premiums only. Specified Low-Income Medicare Beneficiary (SLMB): Helps pay for Part B premiums only. Qualified Medicare Beneficiary (QMB): Helps pay for Part A and B premiums as well as deductibles, coinsurance, and copayments.
Provides financial assistance to those in need. Service details include: - Available on an emergency-only basis, dependent on funding availability - Assistance will be considered for rent, mortgage, medications, minor car repairs, utility bill, or other needed expenses - Can help pay up to $150 in rent, mortgage, and utilities - $250 lifetime maximum. Assistance is provided within a 12-month period and can only be provided for one more additional assistance within 2 years.

A home, one car, a burial plot, $1,500 in burial expenses (if the amount if put aside), furniture, and other household and personal items do not apply for the resource limit. Generally under these programs, premiums are put back into the monthly Social Security check making participants' monthly income increase, which takes a couple months to process.

Provides programs for military veterans who are in need of assistance, career transition, financial education, and housing. Military Assistance Response Program: - Accepts monetary donations on-line to support military veterans in need and their families - Donated funds are provided to assist families with quality of life issues - Funding from the program provides assistance in critical areas such as utilities, auto payments, insurance, auto repair, food, and rent for situations that require a quick turnaround NOTE: Second requests will be accepted, but they must be for essential reasons, with immediate needs supported by the Chain of Command or verifying individuals with at least 45 days separating the two requests.

Representatives can be accessed at the Clinic & Specialty Center, Whittier Clinic, or Brooklyn Park Clinic. MNsure Enrollment On the MNsure marketplace, individuals can find, compare, and choose healthcare coverage, including commercial health insurance plans and low-cost or free plans through government programs. A financial counselor can help complete the online application. If eligible for a government program such as Medical Assistance or Minnesota Care, individuals may enroll through MNsure year-round. Uncompensated Care Enrollment If not eligible for coverage through MNsure, individuals may qualify for the Uncompensated Care discount program. The program provides discounted care based on family size and annual household income. A financial counselor can answer program questions and help complete the application. Sanford partners with Elevate Patient Financial Solutions to provide financial assistance for uninsured patients who have incurred or will incur medical expenses at Sanford. Elevate provides a patient-focused approach identifying the most appropriate assistance from a variety of resources. Services provided are free.
