- Coordinates the Department of Health's preparedness activities and assists MDH staff, local public health agencies, hospitals, health care organizations, tribes and public health officials in planning for, responding to and recovering from public health emergencies and other community disasters
- Administers and maintains Minnesota system for Tracking Resources, Alerts and Communications (MNTrac), a database-driven web application designed to track bed, pharmaceutical and resource availability from hospitals and provide for allocation of resources to support surge capacity needs
- Administers grants funding emergency preparedness, including work plans, technical and administrative guidance and other federal and state requirements
- Assists local public health departments, hospitals and other partners with their preparedness education and training activities
- Coordinates Minnesota Responds Medical Reserve Corps, a partnership of local and regional health volunteer programs that assist health agencies during an emergency
- Coordinates response to public health emergencies such as floods, widespread disease outbreaks, bioterrorism events, natural disasters or other events that have a public health impact. Manages the Department Operations Center and supports State Emergency Operations Center for health effects.
- Leads the planning for and coordination of Minnesota's Strategic National Stockpile (SNS) which allows for the rapid distribution of vaccines and other health care supplies during a public health emergency; manages a state stockpile of resources
- Operates Health Alert Network which alerts local public health agencies, clinicians, hospitals and other partners in Minnesota's health care system to events which may threaten the health of Minnesotans
