Provides free tax assistance to income-eligible individuals and families in Hennepin County by trained and certified volunteers. Assists with preparing federal, state, and property taxes. Tax preparation services offered February through early May and are available virtually rather than in person due to COVID-19. NOTE: Not taking tax filing assistance appointments during the 2025 tax season. Only refer to other community resources.
Through a partnership with AmeriCorps Seniors and their RSVP program, AEOA is able to offer tax assistance services. Certified AARP Tax-Aide Program volunteers prepare Minnesota and federal tax forms. Numerous tax preparation sites are available throughout the county, with in-home preparation available for homebound individuals.

Minnesota residents may be eligible for free tax preparation at the Lakes & Prairies Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) Site. Volunteer tax preparers have completed the required training and passed IRS testing for VITA certification.

Taxes are provided for state, federal, and property tax/renter's credit returns. NOTE: Some complex tax returns are not able to be completed by the VITA program.

The Department of Revenue offers assistance to taxpayers to help them to fulfill their tax liabilities and to receive any credits that may be available to them. Taxpayers can visit website to get information for all tax types including forms, fact sheets, free tax preparation locations, and contact information. Business Assistance: - Answers to questions regarding sales tax, corporate taxes and withholding - Phone: (651)282-5225 Collections: - Answers to questions regarding delinquent taxes and payment options. - Phone: (651)556-3003 within the metro area or (800)657-3909 outside the metro area (English, Hmong and Spanish) Income Tax Assistance: - Answers to questions regarding Minnesota income taxes, renter and homeowner property tax refunds, credits (such as the Minnesota Working Family Credit and the K-12 Education credit) and billing. One-Time Tax Rebate Payments: - Individuals eligible for the rebate but did not receive it by October, review the eligibility requirements on the Department of Revenue website. Senior Citizens Property Tax Deferral Program: - Allows real estate taxes to be deferred until the sale of the home or the death of the homeowners. Applicants must be at least 65, meet income guidelines, own the home, and have lived in the home for at least 15 years. If property taxes exceed 3% of the applicant's net income, the remainder is converted into a low-interest loan that becomes a lien on the property. The program will begin the year after application is made to the program. Any tax refunds or rebates will be applied to the deferred tax total. To apply, submit Form CR-SCD, available at each county auditor's office or online. - Phone: (651)556-4803. Taxpayer Rights Advocate: - Representation of taxpayer interests and rights amid grievances with the Department of Revenue. The advocate can also provide input to policy changes on issues that adversely affect taxpayers. - Phone: (651)556-6013 or (855)452-0767- Tax Fraud Tip Line: - Phone: (651)297-5195 within the metro area or (800)657-3500 outside the metro area. Tips are also accepted through an online form. Individuals can remain anonymous. Where's My Refund?: - A system that shows where in the process a tax refund is, or if the refund is processed, it will show the date it was sent. Processing times vary. To use the system individuals need to use the same information they used on their tax return: Social Security number, date of birth, and the exact refund amount.
