Adoption and Foster Care Support Group Olmsted County sponsors a parent-led adoption support group. The group is open to the public and tailored to meet support and educational needs of foster parents, families considering adoption, or families who have adopted privately, publicly, domestically, or internationally. Mission is to offer families a forum to receive post-adoption support that will enable them to:
  • Enhance their ability to manage the complexity and lifelong process of adoption
  • Form new partnerships with other adoptive families
  • Learn about new resources and training
  • Network with other adoptive families
  • Share questions and concerns with group members
Child care provided on-site by a social worker. Adoption Services Provides adoption services to children in the Minnesota Waiting Children's Program and the families who seek to adopt them.
  • Children who are available for adoption come from throughout the State of Minnesota and almost all of them have been removed from their biological families due to abuse or neglect
  • Most waiting children are over the age of 8, many have physical and/or emotional disabilities, some are brothers and sisters who want to stay together, and many are children of color
Before becoming eligible to adopt, an individual needs to go through a licensing process.

  • 24-Hour Crisis Hotline: Provides a hotline for advocacy, resources, and shelter for all victims of violence. The hotline provides information and safety planning to support victims.
  • Advocacy: Legal advocates can help victims navigate and explain the legal system in criminal and civil protective order cases. Helps victims work with local police, city, and county attorneys to advocate on the victim's behalf. Assist in filing Orders for Protection and Harassment Restraining Orders. Attend court hearings with victims to provide information and support and more.
  • Emergency Shelter: A 24-hour domestic violence and sexual violence emergency shelter within Carlton, Chisago, Isanti, Kanabec, and Pine counties. The Black Dog Hill Shelter provides secure emergency shelter and access to basic needs to survivors and children. Basic needs include meals, toiletries, clothing, linens, diapers, laundry facilities, and access to a food shelf.
  • Intervention: Offers a Batterers Intervention Program to those interested and/or court-ordered to participate in a psycho-educational group led by trained professional facilitators. Participants learn to identify abusive behaviors and are taught to react to situations non-abusively and communicate with their partner.
  • Support Groups: Provides support groups to victims of domestic violence and sexual assault through empowerment, conversations, and activities. Meetings are held in-person and virtual and times will vary by county office.

  • Education: Helps educate and empower families to better navigate the complexities of the system. Provides resources that focus on navigating the court system and becoming a better parent, with an emphasis on fathers/father figures.
  • Family Mentorship: Program replaces traditional case management by recognizing the oppression built into "managing family affairs". Mentors work with alongside families to educate, provide resources (i.e. swag bags, resource guides), and nurture familial bonds for improving the well-being of children and families. This service is currently offered in Saint Louis County.
  • National Relative Search: Offers a relative search service to GKC families actively working with. This allows the family mentor to identify possible relatives across state lines to determine possible placement options and nurture familial connections.
