The Family Support Network connects families of service members who are activated, deployed or away from home on extended orders, with posts in their local communities where they can get assistance with everything from lawn mowing and home repairs to child care or financial help.

- Provides operating support to local non-profit organizations working in the areas of education, health, or financial stability/basic needs - Conducts annual community fundraising campaign - Distributes funding through annual grants to local nonprofit organizations
- Provides sponsorship of eye and hearing clinic at University of Minnesota - Provides assistance for persons needing help with vision, hearing and problems related to diabetes. Primary assistance is related to vision problems such as school age children needing eye exams and glasses - May provide help to get leader dogs - Committee will screen all persons asking for assistance to be sure they are not eligible for assistance from Itasca County Human Services or other agencies. They provide assistance on a financial need basis - Lions collect used eyewear at several locations in Grand Rapids including Norwest Bank, Miners Market, Grand Rapids State Bank and Reed Drug

The American Legion Temporary Financial Assistance program awards cash grants to minor children of veterans who are eligible for American Legion membership. These grants help families in need meet the cost of shelter, food, utilities and help expenses, thereby keeping the child or children in a more stable environment.
