In the community-based program, children ages 8 - 12 are matched with adult volunteers who serve as friends and role models and help youth to increase their self-confidence, become more trusting of adults and develop other assets deemed critical for success. Volunteers and youth meet 2 - 4 times per month based on their schedules in self-directed activities. Agency-sponsored events and a number of no-cost and low-cost activities are also available for matches. Professional staff speak regularly with all participants (mentors, children, and families) and provide guidance, support, and assistance.
