Mental Health Counseling - African American Child Wellness Institute
Academic Wellness and Success Program: School-linked program designed to increase the availability of mental health services to children in pre-K - 12th grade of African descent who are uninsured or underinsured in their homes, schools, communities, and in the African American Child Wellness Institute offices through the use of face-to-face and telehealth platforms. Provides approximately 8-10 hours of direct mental health services including mental health screenings, diagnostic assessments, and psychotherapy treatment including individual, group, and family sessions through the use of cultural specific providers.
Counseling, Outreach, and Public Education Campaign: Addresses COVID-19 prevention and vaccine hesitance within the African-American community. Services include a 24-hour Community Mental Health and COVID-19 hotline, individual, and group crisis counseling (within multi-family settings and outside of the home), individual and group outreach services, as well as brief educational or supportive contact, public education, assessment, and referral to community resources.
Healing Circle, The: Provides a sacred space where community-based challenges are addressed in an orderly manner. Life and death issues such as COVID-19, community violence, and systemic racism are discussed. Provided in collaboration with the Conversations with Al McFarlane program which airs of KFAI Radio Station and is streamed live on Facebook and YouTube.
Mura Moms: Pre-meditated pregnancy and motherhood project which provides alternative methods of engaging African American women in the process of examining how their stress, depression, anxiety, and substance use are harmful to their own well-being as well as that of their baby, and to allow them to learn culturally appropriate stress reduction techniques and coping mechanisms in supportive environments. Overall goal is to improve birth outcomes among low-income African American women struggling with chemical use and/or mental health issues. To accomplish this, both parents are invited to develop knowledge, partnerships, skills, and behaviors that promote wellness, safety, and respect in their homes and in the community. Provides intensive support including intake, education, mentorship, and wellness coaching services to up to 15 women per class.
Project Mura: Pre-meditated parenting BootCamp which provides three intensive BootCamp trainings annually for parents who are raising uninsured or underinsured children of African descent ages 0 - 18. Services include diagnostic interviews, individual psychotherapy, family therapy, group therapy, crisis intervention, and other services. Clinicians provide cultural consultations and care coordination services with other mental health providers, schools, medical personnel (such as nurses, primary care providers, personal care attendants, pediatricians, and psychiatrists) as well as other entities such as religious and social service organizations to provide multi-systemic support. Individual wellness coaches facilitate the development of family wellness plans for each program participant.

Adult Education Programs - Neighborhood House
A variety of adult education programs are available through Neighborhood House with the goal of helping individuals develop the skills necessary for gaining economic self-sufficiency.
Career Training Programs: In partnership with Avivo, training is offered on workplace essential skills, and various sector-specific careers such as maintenance and custodial, medical office support, and more.
College Readiness: The primary focus of this class is to prepare students for the Accuplacer test, which colleges use to determine if students are ready for courses at that level or if they would benefit from remedial English or math classes. The goal is to help students pass this test so that they can enroll directly in credit-bearing classes and avoid expensive remedial courses. Students will also learn the soft skills necessary to succeed in college.
Computer Classes: Students learn how to use the internet, email, and Microsoft Office programs. Every other day of computer class is run as an open lab where students can work on any computer-related project and get support from staff and volunteers. Students work toward gaining a Northstar Digital Literacy Assessment certificate, a credential recognized throughout the state.
English Language Civics: Funded by the Minnesota Department of Education, civics classes teach English skills through a focus on US citizenship, community engagement, Minnesota culture and history, and job skills. Students in these classes all have a goal of eventually obtaining employment or improving their current employment situation. Many students in this class also volunteer at Neighborhood House in order to gain job skills. Offers a course to prepare individuals for the citizenship exam.
English Language Learner (ELL) Program: Classes teach students reading, writing, speaking, and listening skills through the context of life skills. Students learn about health, housing, work, food, money, and many other everyday topics. After students complete the Advanced ELL class, they are able to join the GED or College Readiness classes.
GED Exam Preparation: Classes are designed to help students prepare for the test in an engaging classroom. These classes are a combination of US-born students who did not complete high school and English Language Learners who have completed English classes and need a high school credential for work or college.
