Senior Advocates can provide assistance with advanced health care directives, health insurance claims, landlord/tenant issues, Medicare appeals, and Medicare fraud. In addition, PEARLS counslient offers emotional support for depression. These are dementia-friendly programs and support services.

Health Insurance External Review Appeal - Minnesota Department of Commerce

Offers an external review of health insurance claims that have been denied by the insurance company. The external review is processed by an independent, impartial contractor. The result of the review is binding on the health insurance company, but not on the insured. In-person mediation may be available upon the request of both parties. All other reviews are based on written information submitted by both sides.

Office of Ombudsman for Public Managed Health Care Programs - Minnesota Department of Human Services

Works with individuals enrolled in a health care plan for their Medical Assistance and MinnesotaCare health benefits to resolve service-related issues, ensuring access to medically appropriate services. Provides support to General Relief recipients, including those receiving county-funded cash grants and emergency assistance, by addressing disputes and complaints through mediation, negotiation, education, or referrals to appropriate agencies or legal services. Offers guidance on the complaint and appeal processes available through health plans and the state. Educates consumers about their rights, relevant laws, regulations, and health care financing through written materials, consultations, or public speaking. Advocates for legislative and systemic reforms in health care and social services to better meet consumer needs.

- Certified health insurance counselors assist and provide one-on-one assistance with Medicare, Medical Assistance, Medicare supplemental insurance including health maintenance organizations (HMOs), long-term care insurance, Medicare Advantage, Medicare Savings Programs, other health insurance options, special enrollment and entitlement situations, applications and appeal assistance with Medicaid programs, military health benefits, Federal Employee Health Plan, Railroad Employee Health Plan, COBRA, ERISA - Comprehensive information on community programs, services, and housing referrals for seniors and caregivers - Help to organize medical bills, assist with filing and appealing claims and sending claims in for review, reconsideration, or appeals, where appropriate, and assist with applications - Outreach and educational opportunities for older adults, caregivers, and professionals - Provide assistance in locating information on and completing applications for prescription drug coverage options/prescription discount programs - Provide Senior Surf Days for free basic computer and internet training to seniors and caregivers - Staff and volunteers offer to research referrals and follow-up to assure connection was made with appropriate referral sources
