Programs and Activities - United Blind of Minnesota

Maintains and provides a voice messaging system available 24 hours/7 days a week providing legal, educational, recreational, cultural, and legislative programs to enable individuals living with vision loss or blind achieve personal goals, not otherwise attainable. Services offered: - Phone message lines include the United Blind Newsline, the Social Line, or the Miscellaneous Line. The United Blind Newsline inform callers about current activities, pertinent legislation, and other important matters. The Social Line provides more personal information regarding members and other items of interest, and the Miscellaneous Line is available for comments or suggestions. - Promotion of legislation for the blind - Quarterly meetings usually held on the first or second Saturday in January, March, May, and October. Meetings and other activities are held at various metro locations. - Recruitment of volunteers to read mail for blind persons in their homes ?- Social, educational, cultural, and recreational programs

These events bring those with disabilities together with family and community members to raise funds for UCP programs. Inclusive Community Program activities can include: - Annual Halloween party - Art camps - Educational programs - Super Strikers bowling league

Advocacy Services: - The center advocates in areas of civil and human rights, employment/disability benefits, housing, transportation, and on the state, local, and federal levels Equipment Loaner Closet: - Loans a range of home medical equipment including wheelchairs, walkers, power chairs, canes, transfer benches, raised toilet seats, and more. Equipment are available on a first come first served basis and will hold equipment for a 24-hour period. - Swap Shop: A self-directed equipment listing available for persons shopping/looking for used equipment. Information and Referral: - Up-to-date disability information and referrals to various agencies and individuals within the region - Other Services: Includes disability benefits application assistance, housing assistance, emergency disaster preparedness plan, and more Nursing Facility Transition: - Assist individuals living with a disability to identify in transition from nursing facilities and other institutions into community settings with the goal of preventing institutionalization Peer Support: - Assists individuals living with a disability to identify goals and work to create a unique plan to achieve those goals - Match interested consumers with a peer mentor who provides support, problem-solving, social skills, and more Personal Assistance: - Offer skills instruction curriculum for individuals living with a disability the fundamentals of managing their personal attendant care including how to hire, manage, and more Recreational Groups: - Holds various events for individuals with a disability or a health condition to meet and socialize with others through dances, parties, picnics, and outings Staying and Aging in Place/Accessibility Assistance: - Offers accessible modification assistance and accessibility assessments for homes and businesses for safe access and increased independence in people's homes and businesses Support Groups: - Various support groups are available to individuals who want learn more about their particular disability, wanting peer support, or first-hand information on how to manage their disability. Offers a wide range of programming serving all ages in the community. Supports a variety of engaging opportunities for everyone including: - Adult Education: Provides a variety of cources some include GED prep classes, adult diploma, English classes, digital literacy, computer, and keyboarding classes, college and career prep classes. - Driver Education: Provides driver education classes and behind the wheel instruction - Facility rentals: Schools District 656 facilities are open for community use by citizens of all ages for rentals. - Kids World: Provides fee based child care program for children ages 3 - 12, operating before and after school, on most non-school days and 10 weeks durning the summer. - Project ABLE: Offers adaptive classes and activities for adults living with disabilities ages 18 or older from cooking and crafts to bingo and music.

Cancer Support Programs and Services - Gilda's Club Twin Cities

Provides social and emotional support that is professionally facilitated and designed by and for those who know first-hand what living with cancer requires. Encourages members to create a customized plan based on their personal needs and wants. Program offerings include: - Support: Personalized screening and care planning, group support for people living with cancer and for family and friends; special programming for children and teens. - Education: Lectures and interactive sessions on issues specific to cancers, skills and tools classes, workshops and internet radio program (Frankly Speaking About Cancer, every Tuesday, 2 pm Central on VoiceAmerica Network at www.voiceamerica.com) and online resources and The Living Room online support community. - Health Lifestyle: Mind-body programs, exercise and yoga, expressive arts, and nutrition programs. - Social Opportunities: Potlucks, laugh fests, movie nights, and special events for families and young children. - Information and Referral: Resource library for support and management skills and links to other community services. - Clubhouse: Caring and supportive, home-like healing environment - A Place for Kids and Teens: Noogieland for kids and Mixed Media/Teen Area for young adults. Kids and teens living with cancer and their family members receive support and special programming. - A Place for Adults: Helps bring families and friends together who can lend and give support to the individual living with cancer. An action plan is developed for family and friends.

Social and Emotional Support - Vision Loss Resources

Events: Provides social, recreational, and cultural events that are fully accessible to people with vision loss Peer Mentors: Trained volunteers who offer support to people with vision loss who are new and adjusting to the new phase in their lives. They meet to work on specific goals for a defined period of time. Peer mentors help participants understand and address feelings of depression and isolation. Support Groups: Offers support groups for people with vision loss to adjust to the new phase in their lives
