In the emergency department, patients receive a quick medical screening exam. Once evaluated, patients are invited to a more intimate environment staffed with mental health experts for an approach to care that is comfortable, soothing, and healing with access to psychiatry providers, therapists, mental health nurses and specialists to help stabilize patients often eliminating the need for inpatient admission. Patients typically spend 12 to 48 hours in the EmPATH service. As patients prepare to leave, they are equipped with a care plan, next steps, connections to follow-up resources and programs, and a safety plan for the next time a triggering event occurs.
