Minnesota's version of TANF (Temporary Assistance for Needy Families), called MFIP (Minnesota Family Investment Program) helps families work their way out of poverty by providing temporary cash and food benefits to eligible families. Statewide MFIP has a 60-month time limit, and there are some limited exceptions and extensions to the time limit. Participants are required to follow certain work rules. Failure to meet work rules will result in an MFIP grant being sanctioned, reduced, or eliminated. In addition:
  • A woman expecting a baby may receive assistance for herself during her pregnancy
  • Child support will be pursued in those situations where one or both parents are absent
  • Children who are being cared for by certain relatives may receive assistance
?NOTE: MFIP recipients may be eligible for Emergency Assistance - EA, Minnesota Child Care Assistance Program - CCAP, Medical Assistance - MA, and/or Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program - SNAP.

Direct Access allows an individual to go directly to a provider they choose to receive a comprehensive assessment and access care immediately. Assessments assess an individual's functioning across a variety of dimensions. They are primarily targeted at substance use/chemical dependency disorders and provide person-centered recommendations for care. Additional services include:

Cash-grant program for adults with low incomes experiencing a household emergency. Adults can receive assistance once every 12 months. The assistance received must resolve the crisis. Adults must use their own money first. The amount of assistance provided might not cover the entire emergency, but it can help. Emergency General Assistance provides short-term, one-time assistance for persons in a financial crisis because of fire, flood, storm, illness, accident, theft, utility shut-off, eviction, foreclosure, moving expense, necessary home repairs, or need for furniture or appliance replacement or repair.

  • Emergency funds may be available if the individual cannot pay for basic needs, such as shelter or food, and their health or safety is at risk because of this
People who get GA are also eligible for help with medical and food costs through Medical Assistance - MA and the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program - SNAP.

Provides cash assistance to help adults receiving Supplemental Security Income - SSI pay for their basic needs. Adults who are blind, have a disability, or are age 65 and older but don't qualify for SSI because of their income may still be eligible for MSA if they meet income requirements. The basic monthly MSA grant is calculated using either the maximum SSI amount (Federal Benefit Rate) for the adult or their countable income (if they do not receive SSI), and the MSA standard set by state law. Special Needs Grant MSA also may provide special payments for adults who need:
  • Certain home repairs
  • Certain household furniture and appliances
  • Guardian or conservator service fees
  • Help paying for housing costs through MSA Housing Assistance
  • Medically prescribed special diets
  • Representative payee services
Adults who receive MSA are also eligible for help with medical, food, and housing costs through Medical Assistance - MA, the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program - SNAP, and MSA Housing Assistance programs.

Parents who receive public assistance for a child whose other parent does not live with them are automatically referred for services and are not charged a service fee.
