Administers the Section 8 program that provides rental assistance for families with low income. Rental assistance is paid directly to the landlord on behalf of the voucher holder and family if applicable. Rental assistance is based on a percentage of gross annual household income.

Mankato's public housing is found throughout the city, rather than in one location or neighborhood. Public housing assists low-income people and families to live in subsidized housing managed by the city of Mankato. Program participants pay 30% of their income for rent and utilities. Rental housing ranges in size from one to five bedroom units and are located in the cities of Mankato, Eagle Lake, Madison Lake, Mapleton, and Lake Crystal.

Offers a federally funded (HUD) program to assist low-income households (single individuals or families) in which the head of household (or spouse) has a disability. Mental Health Resources (MHR) and South Metro Human Services (SMHS) have been awarded 75 vouchers each. MHR administers the vouchers on behalf of both agencies and, for this purpose, is designated a Public Housing Agency (PHA).
Allows residents to select units from the private market. The subsidy moves with the resident, and the Housing Authority pays the balance of the rent directly to the landlord.
Anoka County owns four properties which are managed by Great Lakes Management Company. All properties have market-rate apartment rental units.
