Attorneys will be available to help self-represented litigants understand the rules and procedures the appellate court requires. Anticipated topics may include: deadlines, what papers to file, fee waivers, motions, appellate briefs, serving the other party, and what the court will review. This is brief advice, not full representation. Law librarians will also be available to assist the clinic attendees locate forms and other legal resources.

Volunteer attorneys spend about 15-20 minutes per client providing legal advice and/or brief services on most legal issues in combination with services provided by court Self-Help Center staff. Services include: - Brief legal services from volunteer attorneys - Please note that persons receive free legal advice, not representation, from an attorney. Brief advice clinic for people who are representing themselves in an appeal of the denial of their unemployment benefits. Individuals should attend the clinic before they file an appeal with the Minnesota Court of Appeals. This is an initiative of the Law Library and the Labor and Employment Section of the Minnesota State Bar Association. Two types of clinics are available: - Telephone clinic: A 30-minute consultation with an attorney over the phone. An attorney will call the clinic customer at a set time. - In-person clinic: Held at the Minnesota State Law Library. Persons attending the in-person clinic will meet with an attorney for 30 minutes to discuss the merits of their case. Then, they will meet with a law student or librarian for 15 minutes to review the appeal forms. - NOTE: This is a brief advice clinic for people who representing themselves. The clinic attorney is not obligated to represent the customer. Before filing an appeal with the Minnesota Court of Appeals, persons can attend the clinic and get advice about how to proceed.
Provides representation, advocates for, advises, and educates low-income taxpayers with IRS tax disputes, including: - US Tax Court representation - Tax settlements - Preventing or stopping garnishments because of financial hardship - Audit representation - Asking the IRS to change the decision it made in an audit - Fixing identity (ID) theft problems Note: Cannot guarantee a result and does not provide assistance with preparing tax returns.

Attorneys explain legal rights, review court documents, and provide advice on the next steps. Legal Services for Immigrant Families Limited Pro Bono legal representation may be available for individuals with complex family law issues. Self-Representation Clinics help low-income individuals represent themselves in family law cases. Volunteer attorneys will write documents, give legal advice, and help clients get ready for mediation, court conferences, and court hearings. Attorneys do not go to court or meet with the other side.

A group of students, alumni, and reference librarians volunteer to help individuals represent themselves in court. The clinic provides assistance with completing a self-help form for the following legal issues: - Child support modifications - Criminal expungement - Dissolution/divorce - Establishing custody and parenting time - Modifying parenting time Students and staff are trained to provide legal assistance with filling out the required paperwork in the areas above. The focus is on completing the paperwork; if an individual needs assistance outside of the areas above clinic staff will refer them to other resources. Staff cannot and will not serve as legal counsel or representation for anyone in court.
